Electric Revival: Vintage Harley-Davidsons Get a Modern Makeover

Electrogenic, a British EV technology company, has teamed up with actor and motorcycle enthusiast Jason Momoa to convert three vintage Harley-Davidsons into electric and hybrid power vehicles. The three H-Ds, spanning the early 1920s, have been fitted with an 11kW hub motor from UK electric motorcycle manufacturer Maeving.

The conversion process involved extensive research and development, as well as calibration to ensure seamless integration of the new electric drivetrain with the original engines. Electrogenic CEO Steve Drummond noted that the Maeving hub motor was the only unit on the market powerful enough for the job.

Each bike carries its batteries in custom panniers, which can be charged on the bike or pulled out and plugged in separately. The 2.7kWh removable battery packs provide a full charge in about 2.5 hours on a standard household outlet.

The hybrid JDs offer riders the option to select EV-only, gasoline-only, or combined power with a simple switch. The electric motor also acts as a starter for the gasoline engine, eliminating the need for a kickstarter.

Safety features have been significantly upgraded, with modern rear disc brakes replacing the original band-style rear brake and engine compression braking system.

The Electrogenic and Maeving collaboration marks the company's first work on motorcycles. The project required the development of new solutions to convert the vintage H-Ds into electric and hybrid power vehicles.

Momoa was thrilled with the result, describing it as 'the best thing we've ever made.' He praised the bike's smooth acceleration and noted that riding an e-bike or e-motorcycle is a different experience from riding on an old gasoline-powered motorcycle.

The conversion of these vintage H-Ds into electric and hybrid power vehicles sets a new standard for EV conversions, offering a unique blend of style and performance. The Electrogenic and Maeving collaboration demonstrates the potential for innovative technologies to breathe new life into classic vehicles.
