Canada Exports to US Keep Falling as Tariffs Curb Shipments

Published: July 3, 2025
Canada's exports to the U.S. reached their smallest share since 1997—68.3% in May, down from 75.9% last year. This decline is attributed to the impact of tariffs imposed during the Trump administration, resulting in a continuous drop in exports for four months. Similarly, Canadian imports from the U.S. fell by 1.2%. Notably, while car exports rose by 0.9% from April, they declined 8.4% year-over-year, prompting discussions between Prime Minister Mark Carney and the auto industry about trade negotiations.

Despite the decrease in U.S. trade, Canada's exports to other countries surged to record highs, driven by gold shipments and energy products. Overall, while total exports increased by 1.1% in May, the outlook remains weak, with significant vulnerabilities in integrated sectors like energy and manufacturing.

From a transportation perspective, the shift in trade dynamics signifies a potential rearrangement of supply chains. As Canadian companies seek new markets, transportation networks and logistics require adaptability to facilitate these transitions effectively. Enhanced multimodal transport solutions and strategic partnerships in non-U.S. markets could be vital in mitigating the risks of over-reliance on traditional trading partners. Furthermore, as consumer behavior changes, adapting logistics for diverse products and exploring alternative transport routes will be key to sustaining trade growth in challenging economic environments.
