Charging Installations Drop as Trump Ramps Up Attacks on EVs

Published: May 20, 2025
The installation of high-speed chargers in the U.S. declined by over 21% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, as reported by Energy Department analysis. This downturn coincides with House Republicans' plans to eliminate tax credits for electric vehicle (EV) buyers under the Inflation Reduction Act and a rollback of auto emissions standards by the Trump administration. These regulatory changes could potentially create a cascading effect, resulting in fewer charger installations and declining EV adoption rates. According to BloombergNEF analyst Ash Wang, this could lead to a downward revision of charger installation projections for 2030 by more than 30%.

Current estimates for U.S. charging infrastructure have been reduced from 360,000 to 285,000 installations for this year, influenced by uncertainties surrounding EV investments. The tax incentives offered by the IRA, introduced by President Biden, play a crucial role in driving demand for EVs, with the potential discontinuation of these credits likely to disrupt the market negatively. Additionally, although the bipartisan infrastructure law allocated $5 billion for charging infrastructure, some states have halted projects linked to this funding after a pause in implementation under the previous administration.

The impact of Trump-era tariffs is also under scrutiny, as they could raise prices for imported EVs and parts, affecting price-sensitive consumers and potentially delaying the introduction of affordable EV models. Such setbacks could hinder broader EV adoption and the rapid expansion of necessary charging infrastructure.

In the transportation field, the growing unease surrounding regulatory support for EVs poses a significant risk to the market's momentum. For sustainable transportation to succeed, it is essential to maintain strong government incentives and investments in charging infrastructure. The current climate underscores the necessity of bipartisan support for policies aimed at promoting EV adoption, as without it, the ambitious targets for EV deployment and the necessary infrastructure to support that growth may remain out of reach.
