Iowa Law Aims to Strengthen Trucking Independent Contractors
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a law that reinforces the independent contractor model for the trucking industry in the state. This legislation, known as Senate File 377, was proposed by the Iowa Motor Truck Association to prevent the implementation of safety measures from changing the employment status of independent contractors. The law received bipartisan support and takes effect on July 1. Brenda Neville, president and CEO of the IMTA, noted that despite Iowa's existing favorable regulations for independent contractors, recent court cases prompted a proactive approach to strengthen these protections.
The new law aligns Iowa with similar measures in ten other states, reflecting a broader trend within the trucking industry to safeguard the independent contractor framework.
