Iowa’s Biodiesel Consumption Doubled Last Year

Published: April 28, 2025
Iowa has seen a significant increase in biodiesel consumption, doubling despite ongoing uncertainties in federal regulations affecting the biofuel market, as detailed in a report from the Iowa Department of Revenue. The report highlighted that 77.3 million gallons of biodiesel were sold in the state during 2024, with biodiesel blends like B20 and higher accounting for half of total sales, reflecting a growing preference for cleaner fuel options among consumers.

The executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board, Grant Kimberley, attributed this growth to supportive state policies, including incentives for fuel retailers and ongoing improvements to fuel infrastructure, now reaching 921 retail locations. This support has been essential during a time of volatility caused by low federal blending requirements and changes in tax policies, particularly concerning the expiration of the longtime biodiesel blenders credit.

As Iowa continues to lead the nation in biodiesel production, its annual capacity increased slightly. However, uncertainty surrounding new tax incentives has raised concerns among producers, with some plants facing operational difficulties by year-end due to depressed market conditions and unclear regulations. The Clean Fuels Alliance stressed the need for clear guidelines to bolster the biofuel sector and highlighted the extensive role biofuels play in U.S. agricultural stability.

In transportation, the growth of biodiesel usage can be perceived as a positive step towards reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy security. As governmental policies continue to evolve, maintaining clarity and support for renewable fuels will be crucial in leveraging the full potential of biodiesel as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels while also ensuring that domestic energy production remains robust and viable.
