March Class 8 Truck Orders Slip Amid Uncertain Landscape

Published: April 10, 2025
In March, North American Class 8 truck orders decreased significantly, continuing a downward trend influenced by economic uncertainty and tariff pressures. Preliminary data indicated an 8.3% decrease year-over-year to 16,000 units and a 12.6% decline from February. Despite a slight seasonal adjustment increase, the overall figures represented the lowest monthly rate in nearly three years, highlighting ongoing market challenges, including low contract and spot rates that discourage fleet investment.

Experts, including Carter Vieth from ACT Research and Magnus Koeck from Volvo Trucks, emphasized the prevailing uncertainty, particularly concerning future trade policies, economic conditions, and upcoming emissions regulations set to take effect in 2027. The implementation of tariffs on imports, including a pause in reciprocal tariffs but a steep increase on Chinese goods, adds to fleet operators' reluctance to invest in new equipment, leading to a cautious approach to purchasing decisions.

Dan Moyer of FTR noted that this climate of uncertainty might cause fleets to either rush purchases in anticipation of rising costs or delay them entirely until economic conditions improve, reflecting a 25% year-over-year decline in net orders this year.

From a transportation perspective, the challenges faced by the Class 8 truck market underline critical systemic issues. The impact of tariffs could drive up costs for both manufacturers and consumers, complicating supply chain dynamics. Moreover, the uncertainty surrounding future regulations emphasizes the need for the industry to remain adaptable. Manufacturers should consider proactive strategies, such as diversifying supply chains or advancing electric vehicle adoption, to mitigate risks associated with fluctuating tariffs and regulatory changes.
