Port of Vancouver to Add 70% Capacity in Asia Trade Push

Published: July 11, 2025
The Port of Vancouver has initiated the process to select a contractor for building a new wharf under the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project, which aims to increase cargo capacity by 70%. This significant investment, projected at C$3 billion (approximately $2.2 billion), has been in planning for over ten years and is seen as a crucial step in enhancing Canada’s trade infrastructure and reducing its economic dependency on the United States. The project is expected to create over 18,000 jobs during construction and contribute an additional C$3 billion annually to Canada's GDP upon completion, which is scheduled for the mid-2030s.

The expansion will enable the port to manage an extra 2.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually, increasing its current capacity significantly. Despite ongoing debates surrounding the awarding of contracts to international bidders, the port's leadership maintains that there are no policies actively disadvantaging foreign companies. However, local suppliers are likely to have advantages due to proximity, which can impact costs and timelines.

From a transportation perspective, this move is a vital investment in logistics and trade infrastructure. As globalization continues to influence trade patterns, diversifying trade routes and strengthening port capabilities will be essential for Canada's economic resilience. The increasing capacity at the Port of Vancouver could also play a critical role in addressing supply chain challenges faced globally, particularly in the wake of disruptions caused by the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. In an era where efficiency and adaptability in transport logistics are more important than ever, the expansion of the Port of Vancouver positions Canada to be a more formidable player in international trade.
