The Maldives recently celebrated its 60th Independence Day with the inauguration of the new Velana International Airport terminal. This event featured an impressive drone performance with 1,500 synchronized drones, marking the largest show of its kind in the Maldives. The drones performed a choreographed display that highlighted the nation’s heritage and aspirations, captivating an audience of around 6,000 attendees, including President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The new terminal spans 78,000 square meters and is designed to accommodate up to 7 million passengers each year. It includes modern amenities such as 12 aerobridges, 47 check-in counters, 6 self-service kiosks, and 38 immigration counters, all aimed at enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency. Following the drone show, a record-setting fireworks display also took place, emphasizing the celebratory spirit of the occasion.

In an expert opinion on transportation infrastructure, the development of the new terminal at Velana International Airport is a significant step forward for the Maldives. This expansion not only supports the growing tourism industry but also aligns with global best practices in airport design and passenger flow management. The integration of advanced facilities is crucial for enhancing the travel experience and maintaining competitiveness in the global tourism market. Additionally, this project could serve as a model for similar island nations seeking to modernize their aviation infrastructure and improve connectivity.
