Tesla Failed to Stop Autopilot Misuse, Safety Expert Says

Published: July 17, 2025
A safety expert testified in a federal trial concerning Tesla's Autopilot system following a fatal crash in 2019. Mary “Missy” Cummings, an engineering professor and former senior adviser at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, criticized Tesla's owner’s manual for being hard to navigate and claimed the company had not sufficiently addressed driver misuse or incorporated geo-fencing to prevent engagement of driver-assistance functions on inappropriate roads. She suggested that Tesla’s decision not to implement geo-fencing may have been motivated by a desire to sell more vehicles.

The trial is significant as it challenges claims made by Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk about the safety of his vehicles at a critical time for the company, which is pursuing a robotaxi initiative. The lawsuit arises from an incident where a Tesla Model S veered off the road and struck a parked car, resulting in one fatality and one serious injury. The plaintiffs claim that the Autopilot system was malfunctioning and failed to warn the driver of hazards, while Tesla maintains that driver error caused the accident.

Cummings noted a disconnect between Tesla's claims of robust warnings against misuse and the actual evidence, stating she found no support for their assertions. The trial showcases broader concerns about the responsibilities of automakers in ensuring the safety of autonomous driving technology and how effectively they communicate potential limitations to users.

In the transportation field, the implications of this case extend beyond Tesla. It underscores the necessity for clear communication of system capabilities and limitations to drivers, as well as the potential for regulatory scrutiny surrounding autonomous driving technologies. Effective geo-fencing could significantly reduce misuse and enhance passenger safety, a consideration that other manufacturers have already begun to adopt. As advancements in autonomous driving continue, the industry must prioritize safety protocols and user education to prevent incidents like this in the future.
