Toyota Starts Collaboration on Autonomous Cars With Waymo

Published: May 1, 2025
Toyota has partnered with Waymo, a leading U.S. autonomous driving technology firm, to advance the development of automated driving solutions. This collaboration aligns with Toyota's commitment to achieving a society free of traffic accidents and enhancing mobility for everyone, as articulated by Executive Vice President Hiroki Nakajima. Waymo, built from the Google Self-Driving Car Project, is already operational in several U.S. cities with its fully autonomous ride-hailing services.

Toyota has set up a testing ground called Woven City near Mount Fuji that features roads, homes, and various technologies to experiment with robotics and zero-emission transportation. The cautious approach of Toyota aims to ensure that technological advancements uphold its reputation as a safe and environmentally friendly manufacturer. Waymo's co-CEO, Tekedra Mawakana, emphasized the importance of partnerships in building trust in autonomous vehicle technology.

While both companies have not disclosed specific terms or timelines for product development, they aim to explore how their collaboration can evolve into deliverable products. Japan currently allows testing of autonomous vehicles in limited areas, and more companies are also exploring similar initiatives in public transportation.

From a transportation expert perspective, this collaboration between Toyota and Waymo could significantly impact the future of mobility. The convergence of established automotive manufacturing expertise with cutting-edge autonomous technology has the potential to accelerate the adoption of safer and more efficient transportation solutions, not just in Japan but globally. As cities increasingly look to reduce congestion and emissions, such partnerships may prove vital in achieving sustainable urban mobility.
