Trucking Leaders Warn of Lax Oversight in CDL Training

Published: April 15, 2025
Leaders from the Commercial Vehicle Training Association (CVTA) and the National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools are raising alarms about the federal oversight of entry-level driver training, citing inadequate enforcement and slow responses to complaints regarding substandard training providers. A 2022 regulation requires training schools to self-certify their qualifications, but the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) enforcement has been minimal, with only four training providers removed from the Training Provider Registry (TPR) in 2023, and many reports of illicit trainers going unaddressed.

Trade organizations sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy detailing their concerns, noting that state agencies are frustrated by the lack of action against these fraudulent entities, which continue to operate despite receiving multiple complaints. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) echoed these sentiments, urging for increased enforcement and better tracking of commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) issued across states.

Steve Gold, CEO of 160 Driving Academy, emphasized the urgent need for oversight, mentioning that the self-certification process lacks scrutiny and could endanger public safety. He advocates for increased accountability in the training process to ensure that only qualified individuals are granted CDLs.

Effective transportation safety relies on stringent standards and enforcement mechanisms, making it imperative that federal regulations concerning driver training are actively monitored and upheld to protect both the drivers and the general public. The call for enhanced standards and implementation reflects a growing recognition of the role that well-regulated training plays in promoting road safety and maintaining public confidence in commercial driving.
