Two Charged in Murder of FBI Informant in Truck Scam

Published: May 1, 2025
Two men from New Orleans, Sean Alfortish and Leon Parker, have been indicted for the murder of a cooperating FBI witness, Cornelius Garrison, connected to a long-running scheme of staged truck accidents aimed at defrauding insurance companies. Garrison was killed in September 2020 while aiding the FBI investigation into numerous fraudulent incidents that had occurred since 2011. The indictment details how individuals, including passengers and "slammers" who deliberately collided with commercial vehicles, orchestrated these incidents, and how some defendants attempted to intimidate Garrison into silence with bribes and threats. A total of 63 defendants have been charged in this federal investigation, named "Operation Sideswipe," which highlights the extent of fraudulent activities in the transportation sector.

This case underscores the significant challenges faced by the transportation industry concerning fraudulent claims, which not only affect insurance costs but also safety and operational integrity. The increase in suspicious activities, such as staged accidents, necessitates robust training and awareness programs for drivers and industry stakeholders. Effective whistleblower protections and stricter consequences for those engaged in fraud are vital to deter such schemes and ensure industry integrity. As technology advances, enhanced tracking and data analytics could also play a crucial role in identifying and resolving fraudulent patterns in real time.
