ATA Truck Tonnage Index Slips 0.3% Sequentially in April

Published: May 20, 2025
The freight market experienced a slight decline in tonnage in April, according to the American Trucking Associations, although it was still slightly higher than the previous year. The For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index fell by 0.3% to 113, a drop following a 2.8% rise in February that had brought tonnage to its highest level since May 2024. Despite expectations for a market recovery this year, factors such as tariffs and weakening economic indicators continue to create uncertainty. Notably, tonnage also decreased by 2.2% when seasonally unadjusted.

In my expert opinion, this situation illustrates the ongoing volatility in the freight sector, where external pressures such as trade policies and economic conditions significantly impact performance. As the industry grapples with these challenges, it may be essential for companies to adapt their strategies, potentially focusing on diversifying markets, enhancing operational efficiencies, and leveraging technology to optimize logistics and reduce costs. Such adaptations could help mitigate the effects of fluctuating demand and stabilize operations in uncertain times.
