FedEx Names CEO, Chairman for Spun-Off Freight Unit

Published: May 20, 2025
FedEx has announced the leadership team for its upcoming independent less-than-truckload (LTL) division, with John Smith as the CEO and R. Brad Martin as chairman. These roles will become effective once FedEx Freight separates from FedEx Corp., which is anticipated to be completed by June 2026. This spin-off is expected to establish the largest LTL carrier in North America, allowing both entities to hone in on their respective markets while maintaining collaboration in logistics and technology.

Smith brings over 30 years of transportation experience, notably spending 25 years with FedEx in various capacities including COO for U.S. and Canada. Martin, already a vice chairman at FedEx Corp., led the strategic review that prompted the division's spin-off and will retain his position on the FedEx board. With FedEx Freight generating $9.4 billion in revenue in fiscal 2024 and averaging a 25% increase in operating profit annually, the new company is set to have a robust financial foundation.

In terms of perspective on transportation dynamics, this move may enhance the focus on specialized operations in the competitive LTL market, which is critical given ongoing challenges like rising operational costs and the need for improved service efficiency. By separating into specialized entities, there is potential for each division to innovate and respond more agilely to market demands, ultimately benefiting customers and the broader supply chain. The success of such a split will hinge on effective leadership and the strategic alignment of both companies to leverage their strengths effectively.
