US and Philippines Unveil Anti-Ship Missile System During War Games

The Philippines' northernmost province of Batanes sits around 100 miles south of Taiwan, along the Luzon Strait, a strategic corridor on the frontline of the great power competition between the US and China.

US forces showcased the NMESIS anti-ship missile system during annual war games in Batanes province, near Taiwan, as tensions simmer over the self-governed island that China views as its own territory.

The NMESIS is designed for remote operation, with the purpose of being fully autonomous, requiring no driver or passenger inside the vehicle itself.

US Staff Sergeant Darren Gibbs said training out here in Batanes allows them to utilize the system and train within their capabilities, offering unique experiences they don't normally get.

The system can be airlifted and deployed to any coastline in the Philippine archipelago within hours, making it a valuable asset for Manila's defense strategy.

Beijing routinely criticizes the deployment of US weapons in the Philippines, saying it heightens regional tension and sparks a powder keg for Beijing.

Security analyst Chester Cabalza notes that the NMESIS can spark a powder keg for Beijing and asymmetric deterrence for Manila and Taipei in the Bashi Channel along the Luzon Strait.

The system's deployment to Batanes is part of efforts to test operational feasibility in remote locations, with one objective being to practice defense of territory with allies.
