Coupa Acquires Tonkean for $10 Billion

Coupa, a cloud-based spend management platform, has announced its latest acquisition in Tonkean, a workflow automation startup. The deal marks Coupa's second AI-focused acquisition in less than two weeks as it expands its push into autonomous supply chain and procurement technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition follows Coupa's May 12 announcement that it had acquired intelligent document processing firm Rossum during the company’s Inspire 2026 conference in Las Vegas. Tonkean’s no-code workflow automation platform helps enterprise procurement, legal, and operations teams automate intake, approvals, and internal processes using AI-powered orchestration tools.

Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Tonkean developed a platform that can reduce operational cycle times by 50% and save operations teams more than 30 hours per week by eliminating manual handoffs and repetitive tasks.

Coupa said the platform supports multi-agent orchestration and agent-to-agent coordination, allowing enterprises to automate complex workflows without replacing existing software systems. The deal is part of a broader AI expansion strategy Coupa outlined during its Inspire 2026 conference earlier this month in Las Vegas.

The acquisition ties to Coupa’s autonomous spend management strategy with four strategic acquisitions, including Cirtuo, Scoutbee, and Rossum. Tonkean becomes the fourth acquisition tied to this strategy, further solidifying Coupa's position in the market.

Coupa CEO Leagh Turner described the acquisition as 'game-changing' for the company and the market, highlighting the growing complexity and cost of buying and selling. The deal is expected to bring significant benefits to customers, including reduced operational cycle times and increased efficiency.

The acquisition highlights the growing importance of AI in supply chain management and procurement. As companies continue to invest in automation and digitalization, the role of AI is becoming increasingly critical in streamlining processes and improving outcomes.

Coupa's expansion into autonomous spend management and procurement technology is expected to drive significant growth and innovation in the industry. With this acquisition, Coupa is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for AI-powered solutions in supply chain management.

The deal marks a significant milestone for Tonkean, which becomes the fourth strategic acquisition tied to Coupa's autonomous spend management strategy. The company’s technology is expected to bring significant benefits to customers, including reduced operational cycle times and increased efficiency.
