Propane Fuel: A Cleaner and Cheaper Alternative

The use of propane as a fuel source has been limited in the US due to its relatively low adoption rate compared to other alternatives such as gasoline and diesel. However, despite these limitations, propane offers several advantages over traditional fuels.

One of the primary reasons propane is not more widely used is the lack of infrastructure for public LPG fueling stations. Currently, there are only about 1,238 public locations in the US where you can fill up with LPG, compared to over 160,000 gas stations and almost 70,000 EV stations.

The cost of converting a regular engine to run on propane is also a significant barrier to adoption. This conversion process can climb into the thousands of dollars, making it less accessible to many potential users.

Despite these challenges, propane has found success in certain industries such as fleet vehicles. Many of the roughly 60,000 vehicles running on LPG in the US are part of fleets, which often have access to private fueling stations and can take advantage of the fuel's benefits.

The national retail average for a gallon of gasoline when this article was written was $4.55, with autogas – another name for LPG – coming in below $2 in many regions. This price difference makes propane an attractive option for those looking to save money on their fuel costs.

Propane is also a cleaner-burning fuel than traditional fuels. Using propane instead of gasoline can cut greenhouse-gas emissions by 13%. In comparison to diesel engines, propane advocates claim that vehicles running on LPG results in 36% fewer NOx emissions and 70% fewer sulfur emissions.

The benefits of propane go beyond just environmental impact. The fuel is also more energy-efficient than traditional fuels, with each gallon containing 27% less energy than a gallon of gasoline.

Overall, while there are still challenges to overcome before propane can become a mainstream fuel source in the US, its benefits make it an attractive option for those looking for cleaner and more efficient alternatives.
