ABB Equips India's Green Tug Fleet

Cochin Shipyard has awarded ABB a contract to supply power and propulsion systems for two electric tugs under India's Green Tug Transition Program. The vessels will be delivered in 2027 and operate out of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, India's largest container port. This project marks an important milestone in the country's efforts to transition its harbor tug fleet to greener alternatives.

The two electric tugs form part of the first phase of the GTTP, which aims to replace conventional diesel-powered vessels with more environmentally friendly options by 2040. The program is divided into five phases, with each phase focusing on different aspects of the transition. This project will set a precedent for future initiatives in India's maritime sector.

ABB's scope of supply includes electrical, propulsion, automation and digitalization solutions. The company's Onboard DC Grid power system platform and PEMS power and energy management system will form the core of the combined power and propulsion package. These systems enable optimal use of onboard batteries to support varying power demands.

The contract also includes ABB Ability Remote Diagnostic System for Marine, which provides condition monitoring and remote troubleshooting support. This technology will help ensure the vessels operate efficiently and effectively.

Ambitious projects like this one require careful planning and execution. The selection of a reliable technology partner is crucial to ensure the success of such initiatives.

The Indian shipbuilding industry has been working towards becoming more sustainable in recent years. This project demonstrates the country's commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and sets an example for other industries to follow.

AABB's expertise in this area will be invaluable in supporting the growth of India's green fleet. The company's proven systems and deep experience in marine engineering make it an ideal partner for this project.

The two electric tugs will play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from India's ports. As the country continues to invest in its maritime sector, initiatives like this one will become increasingly important.

As the world shifts towards more sustainable energy sources, projects like this one will become more prevalent. The success of this initiative will have far-reaching implications for the global maritime industry.
