Lingenfelter's 9.9-Liter V8 Super SUV

Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, a renowned turner shop, has been involved in various high-performance projects over the years. Founded in the 1970s, the company has gained recognition for its innovative cylinder deactivation technology and powerful engine builds, including a 1,400-horsepower Corvette.

In the mid-1990s, GMC approached Lingenfelter Performance with a request to transform the Suburban into a genuine performance machine. The project was commissioned as a feasibility study for a potential high-performance powertrain, but some stories suggest that the true motivation behind it was to create armored Suburbans capable of moving at high speeds in desert environments.

The initial engine used in the project was the 7.4-liter Vortec V8, which was deemed insufficient for Lingenfelter's vision. The company opted to use a heavy-duty marine engine block instead, resulting in a massive 9.9-liter V8 engine.

To accommodate this enormous displacement, Lingenfelter developed a custom intake manifold also used in Mercury Marine applications. This led to an astonishing 550 horsepower and 705 lb-ft of torque output from the engine.

The Suburban's impressive power figures made it capable of remarkable acceleration, with the vehicle able to outperform a Porsche 911 Carrera from the same era. Car & Driver's performance tests recorded the Lingenfelter Suburban achieving 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

This level of performance was unprecedented for a vehicle of its size and class, earning it a place among the fastest 90s cars. The quarter-mile acceleration time of 13.3 seconds at 103 mph further highlights the vehicle's capabilities.

Despite being built with 1990s technology, the Lingenfelter Super SUV still manages to deliver an impressive driving experience. According to some who have driven it, the vehicle feels like it was built by Chevrolet in the factory, showcasing its exceptional comfort and refinement.

The project's success demonstrates the potential for high-performance vehicles to be created from existing models. This highlights the importance of innovative engineering and performance design in pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the automotive industry.
