Airbus Wins Major Widebody Order From SAS

Airbus is reportedly on the verge of securing a major widebody aircraft order from Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), with the carrier expected to select a mix of Airbus A330 neo and Airbus A350 aircraft in a deal that could involve between 15 and 20 jets. The agreement could be finalized within weeks, with deliveries scheduled for the early 2030s.

This prospective order would represent a notable victory for Airbus in a competition that also included Boeing. Earlier this year, SAS confirmed it was evaluating multiple aircraft types, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777X alongside the A330neo and A350 families, as it sought to position itself for future long-haul growth.

The Airbus choice makes sense given the vast network of Airbus aircraft currently operated by the airline. The airline ultimately favored Airbus to maintain fleet commonality and reduce operating costs, a factor that has become increasingly important as airlines seek efficiencies amid rising expenses and ongoing supply chain challenges.

Selecting Airbus again would allow the carrier to leverage existing pilot training programs, maintenance infrastructure, spare parts inventories, and operational procedures rather than introducing a new aircraft family. This approach is particularly appealing in an era of rising fuel costs and increasing regulatory pressures.

While Boeing's 787 remains one of the world's most successful long-haul aircraft and the 777X offers substantial capacity growth potential, introducing either type would have added complexity to SAS' fleet structure. For an airline focused on disciplined expansion, fleet commonality likely offered a compelling advantage.

SAS has made no secret of its ambitions to expand its intercontinental network. In February, Chief Executive Anko van der Werff confirmed the airline was studying a substantial widebody acquisition to capitalize on growing demand for long-haul travel.

The reported aircraft mix also suggests SAS is seeking flexibility rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. By selecting both A330 neo and A350, the carrier can adapt to changing market conditions and adjust its fleet accordingly.
