Richard Childress revealed that he and Kyle Busch had planned to announce at Michigan International Speedway that the NASCAR champion would return to Richard Childress Racing in 2027.
Childress described the loss of Busch as an 'unbelievable challenge' and said they had a great conversation about how Busch would be given cars like he was given in the past if he made the Chase this year.
Busch recorded top-10 finishes in two of the three points races prior to his death, 24th in the standings, 66 points out of 16th when he died unexpectedly May 21 from bacterial pneumonia that progressed into sepsis.

The top 16 drivers in the standings advance into the post-season, but Childress said the team hasn't had the year they expected or wanted, with many opportunities not being finished off.
Childress reiterated that Busch's No. 8 car will be held for his son Brexton should he ever want to use it, and Austin Hill will finish the Cup Series season in Busch's car.
The stylized No. 8 that Busch used at RCR would be shelved until Busch's son is ready to use it even if he didn't drive for RCR.

Childress said a friendship developed between him and Busch, built on hard work and a desire to win, which was similar to the relationship he had with seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt.
Childress knew Earnhardt's future plans as he did Busch's, but now has to navigate the loss of his friend and teammate.
The news marks a significant development for RCR, as they look to rebuild after losing one of their top drivers.
